We are going on first trip to Disney in October – we are stying on site but have tickets for Kennedy – should we get taxi – or hire a car for a day – is it far, easy to drive from resort etc….
The Kennedy Space Centre is located west of Orlando and is actually quite some distance from Walt Disney World – about 65 miles and will probably take you about an hour to 90 minutes, depending on traffic. You have three options: hire a car for a day, get a taxi or use a shuttle. I’ll take you through each of those:
Hiring a car is the option I would recommend, especially if there is more than just a couple of you. If you’re staying on site and only wish to hire a car for just the one day, the easiest way to car hire would be to use the WDW Car Care Centre, near Magic Kingdom, which is run by Alamo and National. They run a shuttle service to pick you up from your resort and take you to collect your hire car. They also run a service at the Disney Dolphin, so if you’re staying in the Boardwalk area, that may be a better option for you. You can book this in advance, online at Alamo.com – you will see both of these place as an option for the location if you browse through, or you can phone them from your resort in advance, to book – your hotel will help you with that. I would also recommend hiring a sat-nav and using that to ensure you get there ok – but that might be simply because I can’t get anywhere without one these days! These are directions the Space Centre provide. The route includes a toll road but it is an easy drive and easy to find once you get close by.
Getting a cab – depending on your budget, this might be an option. It is probably the easiest way to get there, but you’d be looking at a large fare for the 60-70 miles, so it is also the most expensive
Your final option would be to use a shuttle service. Kennedy Space Centre tours offers one, for around $60 per person and they collect from either All Stars Music or Disney Swan, so you’d need to make your way there quite early, which may mean getting a cab on top of the shuttle cost. Shuttles are shared rides and may make a few stops at different hotels along the way to pick up other guests and then take you all to the Space Centre. As there is a per person charge for this it is often less economical than car hire if you’re a big family.
I would definitely recommend hiring a car, but there are alternatives if you don’t feel comfortable doing that!
